Exercise Tolerance Testing (Exercise Challenge Test)

Exercise Tolerance TestingAn exercise tolerance test is performed to evaluate symptoms such as coughing, wheezing, tightness, shortness of breath or poor performance with exercise.

Typically, a baseline spirometry and pulse oximetry are done and then exercise is performed either to achieve symptoms or to hit a specific target heart rate. Spirometry and oximetry are then performed at 5-minute intervals for 30 minutes looking for specific changes in the airflow pattern as well as rate of recovery. Once a diagnosis of exercise-induced bronchospasm is determined, a medication and exercise program can be designed to relieve the symptoms.
